Under 4 weeks is not a long stay holiday Area Details Frigilana is a stunning and beautiful white washed hill village. It has won a first prize for its restoration and presentation. The village is a tangle of narrow cobbled streets lined by whitewashed houses, their wrought-iron balconies filled with planters of brilliant red geraniums. Our Frigiliana holiday apartment is in the middle of the old village. 3 minutes from the church square of St Antonio - the most desirable part of Frigiliana.
Small plazas provide shady seating while the village bars are popular with visitors who come here to taste the locally produced wine. There are also several excellent shops near our Frigiliana holiday apartment selling pottery and ceramics, including decorative plates with their distinctive Arab design.
The local olive oil and wine is widely available and cheap. Our Frigiliana holiday apartment is 3only a 10 minute drive to the beaches of Nerja, Baviera golf. 90 minute drive to Sierra Nevada, skiing and Granada and Marbella.
As is the case with many other villages, Frigiliana dates back to Roman times but owes its urban design to the Moslem occupation.
Perched like a balcony on the slopes of the Sierra Almijara, it offers one of the prettiest and most spectacular views of the Costa del Sol. Apart from its beauty, the village boasts places of great interest, such as Las Hoces del Higueron, and buildings such as the sugar mill, formerly the Count of Frigiliana’s Palace, where the famous sugar cane honey is made. This palace is a 10 minute walk from our Frigiliana holiday apartment.
The muncipal area of Frigiliana has been inhabited since time immemorial, as witnessed by the Neolithic remains found at the Cueva de los Murcielagos cave.
The Phoenicians left their mark in the form of a Palaeo-Punic necropolis dating from between the 7th and 6th centuries B.C., ruins of which were discovered on Cerro de las Sombras hill 2 kilometres from our Frigiliana holiday apartment; this could point to the existence of a Phoenician city built to facilitate commerce and transport of merchandise between the coast and the interior.
The presence of the Romans is considerably more evident: the name Frigiliana comes from the Latin "Frexinius ana", meaning "Frexinius’ farm". A short distance from the Frigiliana holiday apartment, on the 976-metre high El Fuerte hill, stands a location known as Frigiliana la Vieja, (Old Frigiliana), where remains of Roman fortifications, dwellings and coins dating back to imperial times have been found.
However, it was not until Moslem times that the first real settlement appeared, with groups of houses being built and subsequently protected by an Arabic alcázar or fortress, thus providing the origins of the present-day village, which, by the 11th century, was known as Fixniana. We were going to call our Frigiliana holiday apartment by this name, initially.
In May 1487, shortly after the fall of Velez Malaga into Christian hands, representatives of Frigiliana’s Moslem community paid homage to the Catholic Monarchs in an attempt to avoid reprisals and conserve some semblance of rights for the morisco (Moslem converts to Christianity) population.
In 1501, the Catholic Monarchs ceded Frigiliana’s territory to a trusted Jew, Maymonn Levi, in return for services rendered to the Crown. Later, in 1508, it was incorporated into the estate of a Castilian nobleman, don Iñigo Manrique de Lara.
Before long, the morisco rebellion which swept the whole of the Axarquia region, having originated in the Alpujarra region of Granada in the second half of the 16th century, was receiving strong support in the Frigiliana area: the difficult living conditions endured by inhabitants dominated by Christian troops created hostility which ended in open rebellion led by Martin Alguacil -a native of Competa- and Fernando El Darra. The moriscos established themselves at a castle in El Peñon de Frigiliana, El Fuerte, a thirty minute walk from our Frigiliana holiday apartment, where they managed to repel the first battalions of the forces sent by the governor of Velez-Malaga, Arevalo de Zuarzo, in May 1569; it took reinforcements from Granada, supported by Don John of Austria, and over 2,400 rebel deaths to finally crush the uprising. The castle was razed the ground on the orders of the Commander of Castile, only ashes remaining. You can still walk there easily from our Frigiliana holiday apartment.
By 1570, the expulsion process which banished the moriscos form the area was complete; their confiscated land was redistributed among Old Christians, primarily from Granada and Valencia. Granada is a 90 minute drive from our Frigiliana holiday apartment and is well worth a visit.
A royal decree signed by Philip IV in 1640 set out the village boundaries which still survive today. Our Frigiliana holiday apartment is within these boundaries.
Another historic episode in local chronicles and folklore concerns the participation of inhabitants of Frigiliana in the bands of armed resistance fighters set up to harass the French troops during the War Of Independence. A leading figure was the Priest of de Riogordo, who commanded guerrilla groups which caused numerous casualties among the French soldiers. In November 1811, a large band of guerrillas led by the Priest of Riogordo was ambushed by a group of French infantrymen sent from Granada expressly for the purpose, resulting in 20 Spanish deaths. Other inhabitants of Frigiliana were hanged by Napoleon’s troops as punishment for their rebellion, and a spot near the village known as "La Horca" (“the Gallows”) is said to have been the site of these executions. You can easily drive there from our Frigiliana holiday apartment.
Frigiliana has belonged to the province of Malaga since 1833, having hitherto been dependent on the Royal Chancery of Granada.
The village and its municipal area were badly affected by the major tremor known as the Andalusian Earthquake on Christmas Day, 1884; extensive material damage was suffered.
There are many local festivals and customs, especially at all the major religious dates. Holy week is notable for 2 reasons. First a midnight candle procession on Good Friday, Second a major procession involving most of the village on Easter Sunday. This starts 3 minutes walk from our Frigiliana holiday apartmnent.
The feast day for the village saint (St Sebastian) is January 20th.
St Anthony feast day is june 13th when there is often bull running through Frigiliana.
A local fair is held August 5th and a village market is held every Thursday. All of these marvellous events are very near our Frigiliana holiday apartment
In May and June there is a flamenco competition.
Places to visit include:
Archaeological sites
Among the historical remains in the municipality are strata from Neolithic days to the Bronze Age in the Cave of the Bats. There is also a Phoenician burial ground at Cerrillo de las Sombras which goes back to 800 BC.
The Middle Ages is represented by the ninth century Arabic castle, which was mainly destroyed after the Battle of the Rock, although the foundations and traces of the wall have survived. 30 minute walk from the Frigiliana holiday apartment.
Church of San Antonio
The most significant building in present-day Frigiliana is the parish church of St Anthony, built on the site of an old shrine in 1676 by Manrique de Lara, the family owning the village from May 1640 onwards. There is also a sixteenth century Renaissance palace, which bears the same family name although it is popularly known as El Ingenio, or the sugar mill, as it currently houses the only cane sugar factory in Europe. St Anthony church square is 3 minutes walk from our Frigiliana Holiday apartment.
Hermitage of Ecce Homo and other monuments in Frigiliana
Other Frigiliana buildings include a tiny shrine, built in the sixteenth century to the Holy Christ of the Cane, an old fountain dating from the 1600s, a silo built in 1767 and the seventeenth century Apero Palace. This was originally built as stables and is nowadays used as the Casa de Cultura.
Frigiliana is best explored by foot. There are several buses a day that run from Nerja or, alternatively, leave your car at the car park at the bottom of the hill. Although the village is deservedly on the coach tour circuit, thankfully it hasn't yet succumbed to the demands of mass tourism with innumerable souvenir shops and overpriced bars. Our Frigiliana holiday apartment is 3 minutes from the nearest bar.
