Area Details Readers of Florida Monthly Magazine have named Daytona Beach Florida's “Best Beach" in a poll taken for the publication’s annual Best of Florida Awards. The popular vacation destination last received this honor in 1999.
"We are extremely honored to receive this designation because it comes from our fellow Floridians who have year-round access to beaches throughout the state," says Sharon Mock, executive director of the Daytona Beach Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The Daytona Beach area is well known for its 23 miles of sparkling, white-sandy beaches that span from Ormond-by-the-Sea to the quaint fishing village of Ponce Inlet. At low tide, area beaches can expand up to 500 feet wide and are conducive to sandcastle building, cycling, jogging, fishing or just relaxing in the sun. The area's mild climate, which boasts an average annual air temperature of 70.3 degrees (21 degrees Celsius), allows families on vacation to enjoy boating, diving, surfing, jet skiing and other watersports and beach activities throughout the year.
The area’s largest sporting event, the Daytona 500, received two awards -- Best Annual Sporting Event and Best Motorsport Event. Held annually in February at Daytona International Speedway, the Daytona 500 is considered the Super Bowl of motorsports and showcases NASCAR's most talented drivers.
Families vacationing in the Daytona Beach area will find that it is home to several other Best of Florida award-winning attractions. Adventure Landing Waterpark and Entertainment Center placed second in the Best Mini Golf category as did Tomoka State Park in the Best Campground category. The area’s historic Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse tied for third place in the poll’s Best-Looking Lighthouse category.
Founded in 1981, Florida Monthly has conducted the Best of Florida Awards for seven years. The publication polled its 225,235 readers in more than 100 categories in order to compile the list of this year's Florida's best. A complete list of winners can be found in the magazine’s September 2002 issue Travel Details Daytona Beach has a great, very cheap bus system call Voltran, look it up!
