Area Details More like Spain was 25 years ago, the town is clean, the locals friendly and there is a choice of restaurants and bars to suit all tastes and pockets – Mexican, Chinese, Thai, Portuguese, Indian, Greek as well as traditional tapas, fish and steak bars.
Caleta is built around a large bay shaped like a horse shoe. The main beach is pale golden sand and designed to gently slope into the sea making for some of the safest bathing in Europe. You can go out some considerable distance and still be in water safe enough to stand up in so it is ideal for children.
Around the main beach are numerous beach cafes and bars so refreshments are never far away.
South of the main beach is a second beach made up of a number of little sandy lagoon bays. These small bays are dotted with little stone circles to give privacy and have also been designed with families in mind.
These bays stretch all the way to a large shopping centre on the outskirts of the town where you will find boutiques, restaurants, bars and a large supermarket set in attractive gardens around a pleasant lake. In this area you can even find a McDonalds and Burger King!
Walking along the main beach promenade in the opposite direction will bring you to the harbour area. Here, water sports abound. An area has been especially cordoned off for water sports – wind surfing, jet ski and scuba diving can all be arranged from here and you can go snorkelling. There is a sea life centre and you can go on boat trips to go swimming with dolphins or whale watching.
Here also you can feed the wild but very tame chipmonks which will literally come up to you and eat out of your hand. This rocky area is very popular with fishermen with fresh tuna a popular catch! Equipment can be hired locally.
A mini train runs from the harbour up the mountain overlooking the town where the villa is situated to another centre where there are more bars and restaurants
In Caleta, there are plenty of shops to browse around, a Championship golf course, ten pin bowling, amusement arcades and several mini-golf courses. You can take a camel ride, go swimming with dolphins, enjoy a luxurious hydro-bubble bath, play tennis or go ten pin bowling. There s also a multi-screen cinema which sometimes shows English films.
In the evenings there is entertainment – anything from live acts to karaoke, quizzes and even bingo!
You are welcome to use any of the hotels or large time share complexes which often have good cabaret acts and shows on and a varied entertainment programme at normal drinks prices. Travel Details Most guests choose to walk either into Caleta town or to the Montecastllo centre and take a taxi or the mini train back because of the cheap fares.
Caleta is also the perfect base for exploring this island. An excellent bus service will take you to the sand dunes of Corralejo in the north or the lagoons and golden beaches of Morro Jable in the south.
Buses are cheap and air conditioned and punctual.
If you hire a car you can find deserted coves, little fishing villages and even the wreck of an ocean-going liner beached just yards off shore.
