Area Details The apartment is located in the small town of Los Montesinos about 15 minutes by car from Torrevieja. Orange and lemon groves and two inland salt lakes dominate the area. The town has a variety of restaurants and bars, small grocery stores and bakeries. The town square hosts a market on Fridays that sells local produce and fresh fruit and vegetables.
The salt lakes are a unique feature of the region. The World Health Organisation (WHO) considers this part of Spain (Costa Blanca-Alicante province) to be one of the healthiest climates on the planet. The major reasons behind this are both the mildness of the climate throughout the year, and the low levels of humidity in the air. A major contributing factor to this low level humidity is the drying effect of the salt lakes. They are numerous species of birds that settle in and around the lakes; Flamingos are often seen in the shallows. The area is ideal for walking, bike riding or bird watching.
Among the opportunities for recreation, the town has easy access to some of the best golf courses around. La Finca is the closest at about 10 minutes drive. It was designed by Jose Gancedo and was opened in 2002 and is set in a valley with breathtaking views. La Finca Golf Resort has been built to host open championships and aims to become one of the best golf courses in Spain. Other courses include La Marquesa in Quesada, Villamartin, Las Ramblas and Campoamor all approximately 15 minutes drive away. Further a field is the renowned La Manga Golf Club.
On the road leading into Torrevieja there is the Aquopolis water park that is a fun day out for all ages. The large shopping centre “Haberneras” is 10 minutes away. It has a large selection of shops, restaurants and cinemas. There is also a hypermarket complex nearby which includes Carrefour, Aldi, Lidl and MacDonalds.
Torrevieja is a bustling harbour town that has a lovely sea promenade, a large marina, tapas bars, clean blue flag beaches and other attractions. Torrevieja like most important Spanish towns has a number of Fiestas. The procession on the night of Good Friday is one of the most admired on the eastern coast of Spain . In May the "Ferria de Mayo" is host to 300,000 people & the town comes to life with music, dance & costume. In June the "Holy Heart Festivities" are celebrated with children's games, popular dances, & musical performances. On the 16th July there is the festivity of the "Virgin del Carmen" who is patron saint of fishermen & seamen. Finally from the 1st - 17th December the "Fiestas Patronales" (Patron Saints Days) conclude the year's festivities with the main event, a procession on the night of the 8th. The famous Torrevieja market is held every friday near the bus station. There are hundreds of stalls selling locally produced paintings, furniture, ornaments and crafts. Clothes, football shirts, ornate carpets and rugs, sunglasses and hats are also sold. There is a fresh food section of the market where fruit and vegetables, meat and fish, condiments and preserved foodstuffs can be purchased. It really has to be seen to be believed!
Many beaches can be accessed from Los Montesinos, The closest being Guadamar that has a stunning sandy beach and tends to be quieter than Torrevieja.
