KEFALONIA. This charming stone farmhouse has been tastefully restored retaining its orginal features, but with all modern essentials, including dishwasher and washing machine. Its thick stone walls provide a cool retreat inside and it is surrounded by terraced gardens for sun seekers.
The sunsets are breathtaking as you look out across meadows and the Ionian Sea. A few minutes walk to secluded beach, village tavernas and minimarket. The pretty swimming pool is down a flight of stone steps through the bougainvillaea terraces. Near the fishing village of Fiscardo where you can sit at a quayside taverna and watch the yatchs and fishing boats come in. Or just relax on one of the many terraces in the gardens of this peaceful retreat. Stroll down to the beautiful beach of Dafnoudi where you can swim to an underground beach...
The villa has two large bedrooms, one double with private verranda and the other(twin) with its own stone terrace (there is room for an occasional bed if required). The gardens are full of orange trees and fragrant flowers and the peace and tranquility of this hideaway is a tonic for all who go there - email me for some personal tributes I have been sent by previous guests. There is a DVD and video player, and a large selection of videos and books, plus CD player. The farmhouse kitchen has a wood burning stove for the cooler months and the thick stone walls offer a cool retreat from the sun in Summer months. The kitchen is well equipped (microwave oven as well as electric cooker) for you to prepare your own meals, or stroll along the old donkey path to the local village for a choice of good tavernas - one is listed in the Good Food Guide.
A car is recommended if you want to explore Kefalonia and a 25 minute drive will take you to the famous bay at Assos with its Venetian castle and pretty harbour, and 5 minutes further on is the stunning Myrtos Beach (listed as one of the top ten beaches in the world) and made famous in the film 'Captain Corelli's Mandolin'. A must whilst visiting Kefalonia is a boat trip on Homer's Melissani Lake - a magical sunlit underground lake. Area Details This a quiet and unspoilt area of Kefalonia - a haven of tranquility and ideal for birdwatchers. There are beautiful walks surrounding the property which will lead you through flower filled meadows and shady olive groves, which gently meander down to the secluded beach... or just relax by the pretty kidney shaped swimming pool overlooking the meadow and sea beyond. Set in sunny bougainvillaea clad terraces facing south west so you can enjoy the stunning sunsets across the Ionian Sea. A 35 minute walk (or 5 minute drive) will take you down to the nearest secluded beach. A 5 minute drive will take you to Fiscardo for the evening, where you can watch the yachts and fishing boats pull in to this old fishing harbour as you sip your drink at one of the tavernas on the quay. Travel Details A car is recommended, but local buses and taxis are available. Tavernas and minimarkets are within 5 minutes walk along the old monopata (donkey path) and Fiscardo is just five minutes away by car or taxi.
